Este buque siempre me ha llamado la atención, quizás por sus curiosas formas, con las tres torres a proa que lo hacen ver tan singular. El kit de Tamiya es una calidad excelente para su época, similar en tal sentido a los que utilicé en su momento par construir el Hood y el Prince of Wales. Para completarlo he adquirido el set de fotograbados de White Ensign Models, muy completo y diseñado para este kit. La versión que nos ofrece Tamiya es la original del acorazado, sin embargo, voy a representarlo en configuración de Mayo de 1941, durante la caza del alemán Bismarck. Para ello, deberé hacer algunas modificaciones, que les comparto más abajo.
This ship has always intrigued me, perhaps because of its unusual shape, with the three turrets at the bow that make it look so unique. The Tamiya kit is of excellent quality for its time, similar in that respect to those I used to build the Hood and the Prince of Wales. To complete it, I've acquired the White Ensign Models photo-etched set, which is very comprehensive and designed specifically for this kit. The version offered by Tamiya is the battleship's original configuration from 1927; however, I'm going to represent it in its May 1941 configuration, during the hunt for the Bismarck. To do this, I'll need to make some modifications, which I'll share below.

Como dije más arriba, he decidido construir el buque en su version de Mayo de 1941. Entonces, debo realizar algunos cambios en la maqueta. Los primeros de ellos se encuentran sobre el puente de mando, el cual sufrió varias reformas durante la década del '30. En estas fotos les comparto los detalles del kit y las primeras modificaciones en el puente. Más adelante deberé realizar otros trabajos sobre el resto del acorazado.
As I mentioned above, I've decided to build the ship in its May 1941 version. Therefore, I need to make some changes to the model. The first of these are on the bridge, which underwent several modifications during the 1930s. In these photos, I'm sharing details of the kit and the first modifications to the bridge. Later, I'll need to do further work on the rest of the battleship.

Tras completar las primeras modificaciones en el puente de mando, proseguí con las tareas estructurales. El mayor desafío fue la construcción desde cero (scratch) de la plataforma para los cañones antiaéreos óctuples Pom-Pom. Ubicada a proa de la chimenea, la fabriqué utilizando plástico de alto impacto y foam board. Asimismo, reemplacé las tuberías originales de la chimenea por varillas de latón para ganar realismo. Finalmente, antes de iniciar el detallado con fotograbados, construí las protecciones de la artillería antiaérea de popa.
Para el detallado, utilicé el set de WEM (White Ensign Models). Como es habitual en la marca, la calidad es excelente; aunque piezas como la estrella del mástil o los montajes Pom-Pom exigen paciencia, el resto del conjunto se trabaja con facilidad. En cuanto a los cañones cuádruples Vickers de las bandas del puente, recurrí al 'cajón de sastre' utilizando sobrantes del set para destructores británicos, también de WEM, que empleé en el ARA Buenos Aires. Con las reformas y el detallado concluidos, el modelo está listo para la fase de pintura
After completing the initial modifications to the bridge, I moved forward with the structural work. The most significant challenge was scratch-building the platform for the octuple Pom-Pom anti-aircraft guns. Located forward of the funnel, I fabricated it using high-impact polystyrene and foam board. Additionally, I replaced the funnel piping with brass rods for a more realistic finish. Finally, before starting the photo-etched (PE) detailing, I constructed the shields for the aft AA guns.
For the detailing phase, I used the WEM (White Ensign Models) photo-etch set. As expected from this brand, the quality is outstanding; while some components—like the masthead star and the Pom-Pom mounts—are quite intricate to assemble, the rest of the set is very user-friendly. To recreate the quadruple Vickers guns mounted on the bridge wings, I dipped into my spares from the British destroyer PE set, from WEM too, that I previously used for the ARA Buenos Aires. With the structural reforms and detailing now complete, the model is ready for the paint shop.
