Al igual que el kit del HMS Hood que construí hace dos años, esta vez se trata nuevamente de un clásico de Tamiya de la serie Water Line, de la década del '70. A pesar de lo añejo del modelo, presenta detalles y matricería de calidad y las primeras impresiones al comenzar su armado son buenas, presentando buen encastre de las piezas. Para completar el modelo he escogido el set de Tom's Modelworks, un buen producto, pero cuyo metal es demasiado delgado y deben manipularse las partes con cuidado. Además eché manos a sobrantes de otros sets de fotograbados, como el de Voyager utilizado para el Hood y el correspondiente a buques ingleses anteriores a 1950 de White Ensign Models.
As the HMS Hood kit that I built two years ago, this time it's now again a classic of the Water Line series by Tamiya, from the 70s. In spite of the age of the model, it presents accurate details and quality moldings and the first impressions at the beginning of its assembly are good, presenting a correct fit of the pieces. To complete the model I chose the set from Tom's Modelworks, a nice product, but the metal is too thin and the parts must be handled with care. I also took leftovers from other photoetched sets, such as the Voyager's used for the Hood and the one corresponding to the Pre 1950 British ships by White Ensign Models.

Estas primeras fotos se corresponden al inicio de la construcción del buque, habiendo armado ya las superestructuras y colocando las primeras piezas de fotograbados. Dada la calidad del kit no ha sido necesario masillar más que en algunos pocos sitios específicos. En cuanto a las modificaciones, hasta ahora sólo debí agregar las protecciones de las ametralladoras antiáereas que están omitidas en el modelo.
These first photos correspond to the beginning of the construction of the ship, having already assembled the superstructures and placing the first pieces of photoetched. Due to the quality of the kit it has not been necessary to putty more than in a few specific sites. As for the modifications, until now I only had to add the protections of the anti-aircraft machine guns that are omitted in the model.
A continuación más trabajos con los fotograbados y algunos detalles añadidos al modelo. Los mástiles fueron reconstruidos con alambre de cobre y el avión Walrus fue realizado en scratch, dado que el original incluído en el kit lo utlicé años atrás en la construcción del ARA La Argentina. Además debí reemplazar las antenas de los radares tipo 282 y 285 del set de Tom's Modelworks por los del set de Eduard para el King George V ya que las primeras eran muy delgadas y se deformaron al doblarlas. El buque ya está listo para pintura.
Below more work with photoetched parts and some details added to the model. The masts were rebuilt with copper wire and the Walrus plane was made in scratch, since the original included in the kit was used years ago in the construction of the ARA La Argentina. Also, I had to replace the Tom's Modelworks' type 282 and 285 antennas for those of the Eduard's for the King George V, since the first ones were very thin and were deformed when bending them. The ship is now ready for painting.

La pintura de este modelo representó un poco más de trabajo de lo habitual dado el esquema de camuflaje particular del buque. Previo a dar la pintura del modelo apliqué una mano de primer gris One Shot de AMMO. Luego fui dando uno a uno los colores enmascarando entre cada uno con Patafix de UHU (similar al Blu-tack). He utilizado principalmente esmaltes Humbrol y acrílicos Tamiya, realizando como de costumbre los desgastes con óleos.
The painting of this model represented a little more work than usual due to the ship's particular camouflage scheme. Prior to painting the model I applied a coat of AMMO's One Shot gray primer. Then I painted one by one the colors masking between each color with UHU's Patafix (similar to Blu-tack). I have mainly used Humbrol enamels and Tamiya acrylics, making as usual the weathering with oils.
